How the Brownlow Medal Works
At the conclusion of each AFL match, the three field umpires independently award votes to the players they regard as the best, second best, and third best on the ground. These votes are assigned as follows:
- 3 votes: Best player
- 2 votes: Second-best player
- 1 vote: Third-best player
The player with the highest total of votes at the end of the season is awarded the Brownlow Medal. In the event of a tie, the players share the medal.
Eligibility
A player who is suspended by the AFL Tribunal during the season becomes ineligible to win the Brownlow Medal, regardless of the number of votes they have received. However, they are still able to poll votes.
